te wharewaka wins another award
Te Wharewaka has received another award, this time at the 2011 NZIA Wellington Archecture Awards in the Public Architecture category.
"Te Wharewaka is a distinctive form that takes a stately position on Wellington's waterfront and re-establishes the presence of local iwi on the water's edge. While the building adopts a simple whare form it has been draped with an architectural interpretation of the korowai or cloak. This shifts the building from being merely derivative to something far more intriguing. The triangular planes of the korowai fold up and down, creating sculpturally dynamic planes of black aluminium fins offering shelter and dappled light to the outdoor spaces below."
